Glossary

‘apa/’ama (AH-pa/AH-ma) n: a contraction for the word Papa or Mama.

Borrado (bo-RAH-doh) n: to be faded or erased. The nickname given to one of the characters in TFLPV: the Ride.

carnal (cahrnawl) n: flesh and blood; a relative.

chale (cha-leh) n: slang expression for “no”.

chiva (cheevah) n: slang for Heroin, but also a female sheep.

chotas/shotas (chotahs)  n: slang for the police; the cops.

grifa (greefah) n: slang for marijuana.

‘jando/’janda (haandoh/haandaw) n: a contraction for the name Alejandro/Alejandra.

jefe/jefa (heh-feh/heh-fah) n: the boss, either male or female. It can also refer to one’s parents or spouse. Similar to ‘old lady’ or ‘old man’.

la pinta (lah peen-tah) n: slang for prison.

orale (or-ah-leh) adj: similar to the phrase ‘forgetaboutit’; it can have many meanings depending on how it’s used and the inflection applied. It can mean ‘watch it!’, or it can mean ‘okay’.

pues (poo-es) adj: well. When used with the above word, it means something akin to  ’well, alright!’

simon (see-moan) n: slang for ‘yes’.

tu sabes (to sah-bes) adj: you know, such as a rhetorical response to a question.

viejo/vieja (vee-eh-ho/vee-eh-ha) n: literally means old. In slang it means old man or old lady; similar to jefe/jefa.
